The first Greek civilization popped up on Crete, with the Minoan Civilization. At about 1500, something happened that enabled the mainlanders to conquer the island--their mainland civilization was the Mycenaean Civilization. That was followed by the dark and illiterate Dorian Dark Ages. Finally, there were the glorious days of the Helenic Age, or The City States. Eventually, after the turbulent Suicide of Greece, these were conquered by Philip II of Macedonia, father of Alexander the Great.
