The Ch'in Dynasty: 221-206 BC
We draw the name "China" from the Ch'in Dynasty. It was established in 221 BC by Shi Huangdi, who was ”efficient, effective and ruthless." He got rid of the feudal system and installed a provincial system with governors instead—it was highly centralized. Writing was standardized, as were weights and measures, and a road and postal system were built. Gold and silver coins were introduced, and the Great Wall was put under construction. Shi Huangdi was clearly a little insane by the time of his death, as he was buried with terra cotta soldiers. (All the people who worked on the construction of the tomb were killed so the secrets would not get out.)
