Rome is Founded: 753 BC

Rome is named for Romulus, one of the legendary founders of Rome. They were raised by a she-wolf (or possibly, as researchers theorize, a prostitute because the words for prostitute and she-wolf are the same in Latin) after being cast out by their parents. Eventually, Romulus slew Remus over an argument. Rome was founded, and became a haven for miscreants and wanted men. (It was a new city, so all were very welcome.)
