The young beast of civilization grew up in Mesopotamia. (Mesopotamia is a region, not a people or a nation.) At first, the Sumerians in the south were dominant, living in the fertile valley between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. As time drew on, Sargon I (from the north) united Akkad and Sumer. Sargon’s Akkadians reigned for about 200 years, but they fell and a city-state known as Ur rose. But, another 200 years later, another state gained power under the city of Babylon. It was the first Babylonian empire. The Babylonian empire was the background for the rise of the first set of laws, compiled by Hammurabi. At around 1500 BC, the Hittites from Anatolia brought Babylonian power to an end.
