It is interesting to note that the story of Ancient Rome is remarkably similar to the story of Star Wars. In both stories, the government starts as a republican system. Then a clever senator is elected consul, decides to declare himself dictator, and changes the government into an empire. (Hmm…I wonder where George Lucas got his inspiration…) While we never learn about the founding of the Intergalactic Republic, I'm sure there would be two Romulus and Remus types at the helm.
The only place that the two stories split is at the conclusion. Star Wars' Imperial Days are short lived, and the series ends with the protagonist rebels victorious. On the other hand, the Roman Empire survived for 500 years before finally falling to the "barbarians" to the north.
